Jordy Nelson Retires as Member of Packers After Signing 1-Day Contract
By Thomas Carannante
A Green Bay Packers legend is calling it quits.
On Sunday the team announced former wide receiver Jordy Nelson, who signed with the Oakland Raiders last year after being cut by Green Bay, signed a one-day contract with the Packers and retired as a member of the team.
The 34-year-old spent 10-of-his-11 NFL seasons with the Pack after the team selected him in the second round of the 2008 draft. He made one Pro Bowl as a Packer, but delivered a number of productive seasons, most notably 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2016, when he recorded over 1,200 yards in each campaign and registered a total of 50 touchdowns.
However, he tore his ACL prior to the 2015 season and missed that entire year. While he did follow that up with a stellar performance in 2016, he simply didn't deliver in 2017 and the Pack cut him loose to save money.
The divorce with the Packers was tough for all Packers fans, but this is a fitting end for the veteran wideout. He'll address the media on Tuesday regarding his decision, and I'm sure it will be emotional.
