10 Funniest Tweets After Refs Help Patriots Beat Cowboys in Foxborough
By Adam Weinrib
The New England Patriots are a better team than the Dallas Cowboys. They've got pedigree, defense, and Tom Brady. They don't need special assistance from the old men who waddle around the field wearing striped suits.
But, oh, baby, just because they didn't need it doesn't mean they didn't get it! The zebras undid a key Cowboys conversion with a Tyron Smith holding call, they gummed up an earlier drive with something called a "tripping" penalty, and then brought back their greatest hit when they needed an easy out after a 3rd & 1 Zeke conversion on Dallas' final drive. Tripping: it never fails! What is it?
Needless to say, the fans had an absolute field day after watching scripted sports television yet again.
The Patriots scored 13 points, looked terrible on offense, and still won thanks to some old men saying words at randomly-assigned points in the game. Great stuff!
Pass the stuffing, Hoodie.
Of course, this is just the latest chapter in the storied love affair between the Pats and the refs.
If you ask them, Patriots fans can bring up individual calls that went against them which prove the refs hate them (there was uncalled holding on the helmet catch!!!). It reeks of desperation and is eternally sad. Just accept it! You don't go 99-1 at home with a halftime lead if the refs aren't looking for something on your opponent.
The reason Julian Edelman and the rest of the Pats react as if there should be a flag on every incomplete pass is...well, they're used to a flag on every incomplete pass. It's simple.
America seems desperate for either Brady or Belichick to go away, but as long as the league employs refs, we'll always be stuck in this same hole.
Clutch first down? That's a flag.
Ball rolling around on the ground for a fumble? Nah, you wish. It's actually a flag, with three penalties on the defense.
Quarterback actively makes a terrible play in bad weather and drops the ball? Sorry, Tuck Rule. We literally just invented that. Also, tripping.
So this holiday season, remember to tip your refs.
We'll see you back here for the AFC title game, boys. And if you think otherwise, you're tripping.
