By Jackson Thompson
Baseball lost a champion last Monday.
Former Philadelphia Phillies infielder Ramon Aviles, a member of the 1980 World Series championship team, passed away at the age of 68 on Monday, January 27. On Sunday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame honored him on Twitter.
Aviles played three seasons in Philadelphia as a backup infielder after starting his career with the Boston Red Sox for one season. He sported a .268 career batting average with two home runs, 24 RBI and 21 runs scored.
The 1980 championship season was the best of his career, as he appeared in 51 games, registering 28 hits, including both of his career home runs.
Aviles is also the uncle of another former infielder, Mike Aviles. Like his uncle, Mike Aviles was a utility infielder and played 10 seasons as a member of five different teams.
