2-Time Stanley Cup Champ Brooks Orpik Announces Retirement from NHL
By Charles Nason
After 15 seasons on the blue line, defenseman Brooks Orpik has announced his retirement from the NHL. Across 1,035 games with both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals, Orpik racked up 194 points to go with two Stanley Cups in 2009 and 2018.
In both Pittsburgh and Washington, Orpik served as assistant captain as a leader both on and off the ice. Opposing forwards will have plenty less to worry about next year with Orpik hanging up his skates.
The 38-year-old was one of the more well-respected defenders around the league during his professional years. Although he was never one to shy away from physical play and the occasional penalty, he was known more so for his solid and smart skills on the blue line, as well as his excellent hockey IQ. He showcased that both in the NHL and in international play, playing for the USA in the 2000 World Junior Hockey championship, 2006 World Hockey Championship, and at the Olympic games in 2010 and 2014.
Even on teams with some of the best players in the world, such as Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, Orpik was instrumental on both Cup-winning squads. For both teams, he served as a top-four defenseman who led the way with grit, skill and class.
As Orpik announces his retirement from the game, the Capitals will have massive skates to fill not just at the defensive position, but in the leadership department.
"I've been extremely lucky to have the best job in the world for many years, but my body is telling me it is time to move on to something new," Orpik said in an official team release. "I'll be forever grateful for the memories and relationships that hockey has given me."
