2019 World Series Proved Yankee Fans Put Too Much Stock in Home Field Advantage Excuse
By Jerry Trotta
The 2019 World Series was a phenomenon that baseball fans had never witnessed before, in more ways that one. Perhaps the most telling narrative to emerge in the aftermath, however, was the fact that the neither the Washington Nationals or Houston Astros won a game at home.
When you look back at the Nationals postseason path, we really shouldn't be surprised that they were able to dispose of the Astros at Minute Maid Park as easily as they did. In the end, they won their last EIGHT road games in October.
Real teams win on the road, and this year's Fall Classic proves that New York Yankees fans, who were previously lamenting over their club not having home field advantage, should sit down and accept defeat.
It's quite easy to point out that the Yankees were positioned, better than the previous three years mind you, to hoist the Commissioner's Trophy.
The Bombers even managed to steal Game 1 of the ALCS in Houston, but failed to take advantage of that impressive triumph by dropping Game's 3, 4 and 5 -- a stretch where they should've had the Astros on the ropes. Instead, they fell short in five games.
Despite having their backs against the wall on several occasions throughout the World Series, the Nationals put their head down and came away with victories. How many pundits wrote them off after they squandered a 2-0 series lead by losing three straight at Nationals Park?
Real championship contenders simply don't place too much stock in having the backing of a raucous home crowd. Is it a perk? Absolutely. But fans that are enamored with the prospect of it were proved foolish in 2019.
