Yankees Reveal Full List of Non-Roster Players Invited to 2020 Spring Training
By Scott Rogust
The NFL season is officially over, which means that baseball fans can emerge from their slumber and brace the sudden approach of Spring Training. Perhaps no team has more hype surrounding them than the New York Yankees, who are the perennial favorites to win the World Series.
Of course, the first step to accomplishing that goal is to have a successful preseason run down in Tampa, and on Monday, the Yankees revealed they've invited 19 non-roster players to Spring Training.
Perhaps the biggest name on the list is right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt, the Bombers' first-round selection in the 2017 MLB Draft. Schmidt uses a four-pitch arsenal that's regarded as the best among all pitchers in New York's prospect pipeline.
Last season in the minors, Schmidt accumulated a 6-5 record on a 3.47 ERA while striking out 102 batters in 90.2 innings.
Another pitching prospect making the trip to Tampa is Alexander Vizcaino. In 2019, the Yankees' No. 13 prospect recorded a 4.38 ERA and struck out 128 batters in 115 innings pitched.
When watching spring action for the Yankees, eyes will also be on the battle of the backstops. With Austin Romine leaving via free agency for the Detroit Tigers, there's going to be a competition for the No. 3 catcher's role behind Gary Sanchez and Kyle Higashioka.
Chris Iannetta, Erik Kratz, Josh Thole, and Kellin Deglan will have a chance to etch their spot on the Yankees roster at some point in the 2020 season, but only if they have a tremendous spring.
