3 Worst-Case Scenarios for the Miami Dolphins in 2020
By Alexander Wolz
On paper, the 5-11 record for the Miami Dolphins in 2019 may seem disappointing, but what Brian Flores accomplished is just shy of remarkable. A lost team routinely at the bottom of the NFL standings finally seems to be finding its way, as Flores overhauled the roster and began to build a foundation for success. With Tom Brady out of the way and multiple signings heading down to the 305, the 2020 season may be the one in which Miami makes the leap into the playoff race -- but one or more of these three scenarios may prevent them from doing so.
3. Byron Jones and Kyle Van Noy Were Overpaid
The Fins have not been shy in spending money, particularly on the defense. Two of the most notable signings include cornerback Byron Jones and linebacker Kyle Van Noy. A one-time Pro Bowler and a two-time Super Bowl champion are bound to elevate a struggling Dolphins defense ranked toward the bottom of the league across the board, right? With a combined nine years and $133 million invested in them, both defenders must deliver for the Dolphins to improve this season.
2. DeVante Parker Takes Step Back After Breakout Year
Perhaps the biggest bright spot for the Dolphins last season was DeVante Parker. The 2015 draft pick took a few years to develop, but made a significant step forward last season with 72 receptions and over 1000 yards. The Dolphins are committed to Parker for the future and he must continue to grow for Miami to win on their investment. With a quarterback with a cannon in the backfield, Parker has to match last year's performance and hopefully improve on it to become Tua Tagovailoa's top target for years to come.
1. Tua Tagovailoa Gets Off to Slow Start in Injury Recovery
The Dolphins knew they were taking a risk with drafting Tua Tagovailoa in last month's draft, but the raw talent was too significant to ignore. Tagovailoa's hip injury in 2019 left him on the sideline for months on end and for many more to come. If the Dolphins hope to enter the playoff picture in the years to come,, Tagovailoa needs to get himself healthy and remain so. With a seasoned mentor in Ryan Fitzpatrick behind him, there is no need for Tagovailoa to rush back to health, providing a perfect opportunity to grow into the franchise quarterback Miami needs him to be.
