XFL for Some Reason Finally Announces the Season is Canceled and We Wouldn't Expect it Any Other Way
By Michael Luciano
The XFL was finally starting to play some of their most entertaining football games at the halfway point in their inaugural season. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the country didn't spare Vince McMahon's fledgling league, and the season was brought to a premature end.
The rest of the 2020 XFL season, which was poised to end in early May, has officially been cancelled. Commissioner Oliver Luck did confirm that the league will return for a second season in 2021 in an official statement released Friday, however.
If we're going to declare an unofficial champion, the Houston Roughnecks, led by coach June Jones and quarterback PJ Walker, went 5-0 this season, so they're as deserving a champion as any.
The XFL announced that star players like Walker, St. Louis BattleHawks quarterback Jordan Ta'amu, and Dallas Renegades tight end Donald Parham, just to name a few, will be eligible to sign with NFL teams beginning at 9 a.m. ET Monday.
Unlike the AAF before it, the XFL actually felt like professional football. The rules, uniforms, players, coaches, and overall product was a cut above other attempts at professional spring football leagues. The league is going to lose a ton of money thanks to half of their season getting cancelled, but started to show signs of success. Come 2021, that promise could be fully realized.
