It was only a matter of time until baseball fans, who have been treated to nothing but good news in regards to the MLB's plans to start the 2020 season across the last few weeks, were going to be knocked down a peg. That's just how it's been since quarantine started and live sports were put on hold.

Per Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the 2021 World Baseball Classic has been cancelled, many months ahead of any form of competition.

This announcement comes just a few months after the official dates and locations of the 2021 WBC, the fifth-ever installment of the event, were confirmed. It was scheduled to take place between March 9-21 in several different cities around the globe including Taiwan, Tokyo, Miami and Phoenix.

The fact that this news comes just days after 1,000 fans were permitted inside Taiwanese stadiums for the first time this season is incredibly depressing.

Prior to Monday's news, the World Baseball Classic was a distant 10 months away. Why those in charge chose a cancellation over a suspension or postponement remains a mystery. However, we have no choice but to accept this settlement.

As sad as it is, the 2021 edition would not have been terminated if there weren't great risks involved with it being carried out. Global sports spanning many countries are far harder to pull off than anything contained in just one nation, of course. Hopefully, baseball will make its international return during the still-scheduled 2021 Olympics.
