3 2020 Mid-Round QBs Saints Should Trust as Future at Position Over Taysom Hill
By Jerry Trotta
Can New Orleans Saints supporters please stop convincing themselves that Taysom Hill is the heir apparent to Drew Brees? That's really not asking a lot, considering the former has only thrived in specific offensive, run-oriented packages. Head coach Sean Payton hardly ever utilizes Hill as a passer, and he'll be embodying a similar role again in 2020.
In 424 career snaps, Hill has attempted just 13 passes. That's all you need to know.
At 42 years old, Brees could very well retire at the end of the 2020 season. Heck, he was reportedly dangerously close to calling it a career this offseason. Therefore, the Saints need to draft a quarterback this year. Luckily for GM Mickey Loomis, there's a trio of gunslingers that could be available in the mid-rounds.
3. Jalen Hurts
Hurts falls at No. 3 on this list only because of the Saints' apparent lack of infatuation with supposed run-first quarterbacks as their No. 1. We believe Hurts' passing dexterity is underrated, and if both of the next two QB prospects are off the board, New Orleans would be wise to take a chance on him. Not many college signal callers can say they've amassed a 38-4 record as a starter. Hurts' heart and desire to win would also be a welcome addition to a locker room.
2. Jacob Eason
Eason's most alluring attribute is his sheer arm strength. The former Washington Husky has a right arm that can make all the throws at the NFL level to stretch a defense. In 2019, Eason completed 64% of his passes for 3,132 yards and 23 touchdowns. The 22-year-old prospect would fit perfectly in the Big Easy. The Saints' superior offensive weaponry led by superstar wideout Michael Thomas only makes the fit more logical. As things stand, Mel Kiper Jr. has Eason projected as a second-round pick. While this isn't necessarily a 'mid-round' option, if Eason is available, the Saints need to give him a serious look.
1. Jake Fromm
Fromm won't wow you with his athleticism, and his ability to hit home run plays leaves a lot to be desired. Those shortcomings have seen him fall in the quarterback rankings in the 2020 class. However, his accuracy and composure in the pocket could prove to be a steal in the third round, where Kiper has his slotted. The former Georgia Bulldog threw for 2,860 yards and 24 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions in his final season in Athens.
