3 Assets Texans Can Offer Jets in Jamal Adams Trade Talks
By Scott Rogust
Safety Jamal Adams is searching for a new home in the NFL after the New York Jets bungled contract negotiations. He was promised a contract offer in January, and has yet to receive one, so Adams demanded a trade, and one of the teams on his wish list was, surprisingly, the Houston Texans. If last season proved anything, it's that the Texans need as much help in the secondary as possible, and Adams would be a major solution to that problem.
Here are three assets the Texans can offer the Jets in a trade for Adams' services.
3. WR Kenny Stills
Jets general manager Joe Douglas' priority right now should be providing weapons for quarterback Sam Darnold. New York lost its top wideout in Robbie Anderson, who was dangerous deep downfield. The Jets could get a perfect replacement in the form of Kenny Stills. We considered throwing in Will Fuller, but we doubt the Texans would flip him. Besides, Stills is already considered the "odd man out" in Houston. Stills did make the most of his opportunities last season, as he caught 40 passes for 561 yards and four touchdowns on 55 targets. Adding Stills to a receiving corps of Breshad Perriman, Jamison Crowder, and Denzel Mims will help Darnold succeed in 2020.
2. 2022 First-Round Pick
It's no secret that Texans head coach and general manager Bill O'Brien moves on from first-round picks like they're bad habits. To secure the services of then-Miami Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was due a new contract, O'Brien gave up Houston's 2020 and 2021 first-round selections. Considering Adams is willing to play for the Texans, you better believe that O'Brien would give the Jets their 2022 first-rounder, much to the delight of the Jets. B.O.B. gonna B.O.B.!
1. LB Benardrick McKinney
We understand the Jets don't necessarily need an inside linebacker, but if they cave in to Adams' demands, they need to get the best player possible. That player is Benardrick McKinney, the 2018 Pro Bowl linebacker. McKinney is a tackling machine, as he's tallied over 100 in three of his five seasons. Houston is in a bind, as up-and-coming linebacker Zach Cunningham is set to hit free agency at the conclusion of this upcoming season. In order for the team to lock him in, they'd have to free up cap space. That leaves McKinney as the odd man out. On the upside, he can really increase his production alongside CJ Mosley in the shadows of New York City. Oh, and he's already locked in on a relatively cheap linebacker contract for the next four years. It's a win for both the Jets and McKinney!
