3 Astros Who Must Step Up in George Springer's Likely Absence
By Max Scoli
Houston Astros star George Springer exited Friday night's game against the Boston Red Sox with a hamstring injury in an attempt to catch a fly ball. With the AL leader in home runs and runs batted in likely headed to the IL, here is a list of three players who will likely be called upon to make up for the production they will be losing with Springer sidelined:
1. Tony Kemp
Kemp was called on to replace Springer when he went down in the eighth inning, and will likely take his spot in center field for the time being. The young outfielder doesn't have that much experience in the big leagues, but he is going to have to begin playing everyday with the Astros outfield lacking depth.
2. Alex Bregman
The 2018 MLB All-Star is currently second on the Houston Astros in both home runs and RBI, and will slide into Springer's role in the lineup as the top bat responsible for putting runs on the board. However, his .261 batting average isn't going to cut it. He needs to figure out a way to become more efficient if the Astros want to stay afloat.
3. Michael Brantley
Brantley has been reliable for the 'Stros as of late, batting .316 with 3 HRs and 10 RBI in his last 15 games. He will need to continue his hot streak in Springer's absence, as his production is paramount to this team's success. That being said, Brantley needs to make sure he doesn't overexert himself because the last thing this organization needs right now is another All-Star caliber player on the injured list.
