3 Bears Veterans Who Could Be Cut After NFL Draft
By Scott Rogust
The Chicago Bears don't have the luxury of having a first round selection in this year's draft, due to their trade with the now-Las Vegas Raiders for stud linebacker Khalil Mack. But, without a top dog, they still do have eight picks to work with in the NFL Draft. Chicago could easily address positional needs in the middle-to-late rounds of the draft, and could cut ties with experienced players on the roster who weren't going to make a difference in 2020 anyway.
Here are three veterans the Bears could cut following the NFL Draft.
3. CB Artie Burns
Artie Burns was a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2016, and he essentially solidified his status as a bust in the years that followed. In fact, head coach Mike Tomlin relegated him to the bench, where he accumulated just five tackles in 10 games. The Bears signed Burns to a small deal, adding him to an already stacked secondary. Considering how deep the cornerback class is this year, Burns could be cut sometime after the NFL Draft, possibly by training camp. Considering he only carries a $887,500 dead cap hit, Burns' job security isn't the safest.
2. LB Barkevious Mingo
The Bears' linebacker corps is arguably the most terrifying in the entire league. Already boasting Khalil Mack, Roquan Smith, and Danny Trevathan, the team added Robert Quinn on the open market. Oh, and they also signed Barkevious Mingo to a one-year deal. Mingo is nothing more than a rotational linebacker for the 2020 season. It would be much wiser of the Bears to take a rookie in the middle rounds of the draft to play in that very same role. Mingo carries the same cap hit as Burns, so he could be as good as gone after the draft.
1. TE Adam Shaheen
The Bears have been cursed at the tight end position as of late. Trey Burton hasn't panned out as a free agency signing in 2018, and the Bears added Jimmy Graham last month, who is far from an effective playmaker. Chicago could easily draft a starting tight end as early as the second round, but that won't allow them to cut Graham or Burton, due to their contract situations. So Adam Shaheen would be the one of many TEs who's shown the door, considering his salary in 2020 isn't guaranteed, and he only carries a dead cap hit of $609,644.
