3 Best Fits for Eagles Offensive Coordinator Job
By Scott Rogust
The Philadelphia Eagles clinched a playoff berth with a division title this year. Give credit where credit is due -- they got there not only with the countless injuries, but with an infuriatingly anemic offense.
At the conclusion of the season, the Eagles fired offensive coordinator Mike Groh. Now, they're in search of a replacement. The team already reached out to backup quarterback Josh McCown for the gig, but he turned it down to continue his playing career.
So who's left for the Birds? Here are the three best fits for the Eagles in their offensive coordinator search.
3. Duce Staley
The Eagles are obviously considering in-house candidates based off the McCown report. Why not running backs coach Duce Staley? He was promoted to assistant head coach in 2018, and the running game proved to be the best part of Philadelphia's offense. Just look at the progression of Miles Sanders and Boston Scott. What do the Eagles have to lose?
2. Mike LaFleur
The options outside of Philadelphia are dwindling. But one name that's made rounds is San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur. Last week, LaFleur emerged as a candidate for the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator position, but is unlikely to take the job. With LaFleur leading the passing game, the 49ers ranked 13th in average passing yards (237.0), and led quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a 3,978-yard and 27-touchdown campaign. LaFleur would be a huge get not only for the Eagles, but for Carson Wentz.
1. Jim Caldwell
Former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell is the Eagles' "must-get" option. Caldwell made news this past week after leaving the Miami Dolphins organization. Despite departing, Caldwell wants to continue coaching after taking a year off to focus on his health. Caldwell's work with the Indianapolis Colts is all Eagles fans need to know. He served as quarterbacks coach (working with Peyton Manning) from 2002-08, before being promoted to head coach in 2009, a role he served for three seasons. He also worked as an offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens from 2012-13 before landing the head coaching job with the Lions for four seasons. Caldwell has a connection with Eagles vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl, whom he worked with in Baltimore. Eagles: sign Caldwell and fast!
