3 Biggest Questions Remaining for Steelers as Training Camp Opens
By Parker White
The Pittsburgh Steelers vastly underachieved last year and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2013. A lot of changes have been made, as Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Browns are no longer donning the black and yellow. Beyond that debacle, there are plenty of serious questions marks throughout this team. These rank as the three biggest questions remaining for the Steelers as training camp opens.
3. Will CB Artie Burns Make This Team?
Cornerback Artie Burns is a former first-round pick, but he hasn't lived up to expectations, and the team declined his fifth-year option. Pittsburgh is saying all the right things and seem committed to him, including paying his $800,000 roster bonus, but he's not a lock to start on this team with the signing of Steven Nelson and drafting of Justin Layne, making you wonder if they'll cut bait with him in camp. Teams can always use depth in the secondary, but at that price?
2. Can JuJu Smith-Schuster Fill the Void Left by Antonio Brown?
Pittsburgh went through a full season without Le'Veon Bell in 2018, and James Conner proved to be more than serviceable in the backfield. Can wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster do the same thing now that Antonio Brown has been shipped out of town? The wideout out of USC is coming off a big year where he was named the team MVP. He has all the tools to be a top-tier receiver, and now is his shot to prove it. However, he doesn't have arguably the best receiver in football on the opposite side. Can he handle the pressure?
1. Can Ben Roethlisberger Be Drama-Free and Lead This Team to a Title?
I don't know how many more years Ben Roethlisberger has left in the tank, which is why he needs to capitalize on this season. There's no doubt he had a part in the drama that ensued last year with Bell and AB, but can he put that aside and have a new outlook on leading this team? Time will tell, but there are no more excuses that can be made. It's all about winning, and Big Ben has to be the one that leads the charge.
