3 Biggest Surprises in Clemson's Depth Chart Reveal
By Scott Rogust
The Clemson Tigers begin their National Championship Defense Tour on Thursday, as they face off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
With the game just days away, the Tigers released their official depth chart for the matchup. While some are a given, there were quite a few surprises. Here are three of note that stick out.
3. Freshman WR Joseph Ngata
There have been plenty of elite receivers to come out of Clemson, from DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins. Head coach Dabo Swinney must see some superior characteristics in freshman Joseph Ngata, as he was listed as the back-up outside receiver, behind Tee Higgins. Listed at 6-3, 215 pounds, Ngata will see rotational work, but will be the starting kick returner against Georgia Tech. A tall task for a freshman, but Clemson has faith in Ngata.
2. Two Freshman Crack Cornerback Depth Chart
Sheridan Jones and Andrew Booth, both true freshman, are entering the fray earlier than many expected. Jones has earned the praise of the team and coaching staff following his performance in the team's spring game, with many saying he's playing like he's been at Clemson for multiple years. Booth, on the other hand, is a physical defensive back, but still has some things to work out before reaching his full potential. Still, Swinney has plenty of confidence that both freshman can make a strong impression throughout the 2019 season.
1. Tyler Davis Earns Co-Starter DT Spot
It's difficult for a true freshman to crack the starting lineup, but that's just what Tyler Davis did. Ranked as the seventh-best defensive tackle in last year's recruiting class by ESPN, Davis took advantage of injuries on the interior defensive line in spring training camp. But with the coaching staff raving about Davis, he skyrocketed to the top of the depth chart.
