3 Biggest Surprises on Tennessee's Depth Chart Reveal
By Michael Luciano
Jeremy Pruitt and Tennessee released their first official depth chart, and his second season in Knoxville is looking a lot more promising than his 5-7 campaign last year just based on raw talent. However, several confusing and surprising decisions on the Week 1 chart caught our eye.
3. Henry To'oto'o as a Starter
To'oto'o was a major coup in recruiting for Pruitt, as they snagged him right out from under Alabama. A speedy linebacker that bulked up in an attempt to fit into Pruitt's defense, To'oto'o was listed as a starter. While it will take some time to get him fully acclimated, he will be allowed to make mistakes early as he evolves into a star for Pruitt.
2. Ty Chandler RB1 Over Tim Jordan
Chandler split carries with Jordan last season, and ended up with almost 100 more yards than Jordan, despite less carries. The more explosive back over the power runner in Jordan, it appears as though offensive coordinator Jim Chaney is valuing his speed more than Jordan's power, and will make Chandler the starting running back for a run-heavy offense.
1. An Unorganized Mess at Offensive Line
The offensive line is already a problem, and their depth chart gave little in the way of clarity. Every position does not have a listed starter. Former top recruit Trey Smith is still fighting for a starting spot, as are 2019 5-stars like Wanya Morris and Darnell Wright. Jarrett Guarantano better have improved on getting the ball out quick, as this patchwork unit could be in for a rude awakening once conference play starts.
