3 Center Fielders Mets Should Target This Offseason

New York Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen isn't projected to make significant changes to his roster this offseason, but there are certainly key areas where he could look to improve.

Most fans in Flushing would agree one of those areas is center field, as their club ranked dangerously close to the bottom of the MLB in defensive runs saved in 2019.

Everybody knows that an elite pitching staff is made better by the defense behind it, and with that in mind let's highlight a few center fielders the Mets should target this winter.

3. Manuel Margot

Margot didn't hit well in 2019 -- posting a .234/.304/.387 slash line with just 12 home runs and 37 RBI with San Diego But the Mets don't necessarily need offensive help. Most statistical databases rank Margot as an above-average to elite defensive outfielder and that's exactly what BVW should be looking for. The 25-year-old probably won't command a huge haul, either, making him an ideal target for the Mets.

2. Cameron Maybin

The 32-year-old Maybin didn't play much center field for the Yankees in 2019, but that was more because of the Bombers riches than his ability. The free agency class for CF's is alarmingly poor, but Maybin is unquestionably among the best of the bunch. He would prove to be a viable addition alongside the likes of JD Davis, Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto, and potentially Yoenis Cespedes.

1. Starling Marte

A report dropped on Friday which suggested that New York has identified Marte as a potential trade target this winter, and we absolutely endorse it. If Brodie offers the right price (doesn't cough up his entire farm system), the 2016 All-Star could be the guy that helps get the Mets over the hump. Let's remember that he slashed 295/.342/.503 with 23 homers, 82 RBI, 97 runs scored, and 25 stolen bases for Pittsburgh this past season.
