3 Cheap Remaining Free Agents the Yankees Can Still Sign
By Brendan Balsamo
The New York Yankees have spent a lot of money so far this offseason, dropping $324 million on new ace Gerrit Cole, $18 million on Aroldis Chapman (by extending his contract), and agreeing to terms with nine players before the arbitration deadline. As of right now, the Bronx Bombers are in no spot to keep spending superfluously.
However, there are a few solid pieces left on the free agent market that Brian Cashman could sign on the cheap.
3. Greg Holland
The Yankees don't necessarily need bullpen help, but another hard-throwing righty to help alleviate the loss of Dellin Betances could be a big help. Although the Diamondbacks DFA'd him last season, Greg Holland had a spectacular first half of 2019 before floundering and finishing his 40 games with a 4.54 ERA. In 32 first-half games, he accumulated a 3.30 ERA, 14 saves and 35 strikeouts in 30 innings. He did have trouble on the road, however (an 8.22 ERA), so Aaron Boone will have to pick his spots with Holland wisely if this becomes a reality.
2. Ben Zobrist
After spending the past four years in the Windy City with the Chicago Cubs, the 2016 World Series MVP is a free agent after a tumultuous contract year. Despite missing four months of the 2019 season because of his divorce, Zobrist came back toward the end of the year and started to get back on track, contributing to a Cubs team that barely missed out on the postseason. Despite his uncertainty of playing next year entering his age-39 season, Zobrist could prove to be a valuable depth piece for the Yankees down the stretch in 2020, especially considering his defensive versatility.
1. Jason Kipnis
It's hard to imagine Jason Kipnis on any team besides the Cleveland Indians, but that looks like it'll become a reality in 2020. And why not the Yankees? Even if Kipnis is coming off of a broken wrist that ended his 2019 campaign early, he still hit .266 with 17 home runs and 65 RBI. There's no room for Kipnis in the Cleveland infield, and he'd be moving to a similar situation at Yankee Stadium, but on days when DJ Lemahieu and Gleyber Torres need rest, the former perennial All-Star could step in and give the Yankees a chance to win that day with his good bat and solid defense.
