3 Closers Cubs Need to Go After on the Trade Market
By Parker White
The Chicago Cubs lead the NL Central and look like one of the top teams in the National League, following an early-season blip. However, the one thing that could be their demise is their bullpen, especially with their lack of a ninth inning presence. They ranked 12th in MLB with a 3.97 bullpen ERA, and they rank fifth in walks with a whopping 90 free passes.
That's not going to get it done, especially once September and October roll around. The Cubs lack the financial means to go out and sign Craig Kimbrel, but you have to imagine they have the ability and need to add a bullpen arm via trade.
So, here are three closers the Cubs need to go after on the trade market.
3. Will Smith
The San Francisco Giants aren't going anywhere, and the rebuild needs to begin in earnest at some point. Everyone is seemingly available, and left-handed closer Will Smith will be a hot name on the trade market if he joins the fray, especially since he'll be a free agent at seasons end. Smith holds a 2.89 ERA with a incredible strikeout (12.5 K/9) and walk (1.9 BB/9) rates.
2. Shane Greene
Detroit Tigers closer Shane Greene is first in the AL with 15 saves, to go along with a 1.35 ERA. He's proven he can close the door, something the Cubs are in desperate need of. The former starter has been lights out as a reliever this year, and his power arm could do wonders for a Cubs team.
1. Ken Giles
The Cubs reportedly have interest in Ken Giles, and you can't blame them when you look at his numbers this season, which thus far ranks as a career-best. Giles has 10 saves and currently holds a 1.37 ERA with a 14.2 K/9. You have to wonder if he can keep this up and not revert back to his Astros days, but he has a power arm and the ability to get the final three outs of the game.
