3 Contending Teams Who Should Take a Risk and Overpay for Edwin Diaz to Fortify Bullpen
By Kevin Aquino
The Mets are reportedly willing to part ways with Edwin Diaz, but New York's asking price for Diaz is apparently so high that teams aren't willing to negotiate. Well, while the 25-year-old will certainly command a high asking price, if the Mets lower their tag a touch, teams could be in the market. Here are three contenders who should consider overpaying for Diaz, despite his struggles, and add him to their bullpen.
1. Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox are in need of a closer, so why not run with Diaz? We know who Diaz used to be, so Boston should take a chance while they’re sitting at third in the AL East. They’re only one game behind the Rays and if Diaz can somehow return to form, can close the gap between their rival, the Yankees.
2. Atlanta Braves
Atlanta has been linked to Ken Giles and Alex Colome as potential closers, but if either of those deals fail to come to fruition, the Braves can take a flyer on Diaz. The Braves are one of only two NL teams to reach 60 wins thus far (Dodgers have 67) and can try to put faith in the former Mariners pitcher who had a 1.96 ERA if they fail to find another back-end reliever.
3. Minnesota Twins
Another team that’s perched atop of their division, the Twins have a very capable closer in Taylor Rogers, but Diaz can wedge his way into first in line ahead of Trevor May. In five games finished this year, May has a 4.10 ERA, which yes, is still better than Diaz’s 4.81, but May’s never reached Diaz’s peak. If the Twins are willing to take the risk, it could pay off with Diaz.
