3 Contract Extensions the Packers Need to Explore This Offseason
By Thomas Carannante
The Green Bay Packers were throttled by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game in what was yet another disappointing playoff exit for the historic franchise. While the loss is still raw for many, the offseason is here for the Pack and the front office needs to get to work as soon as possible.
General manager Brian Gutekunst made a splash in free agency last offseason to revamp the team's defense, but now it's time he focuses on these key in-house options. Here are three players he should explore contract extensions with in the coming months.
3. Kenny Clark
It won't be cheap, but an extension for defensive tackle Kenny Clark needs to happen. He's a free agent after next season and the Pack need to make sure he's stuffing runs up the middle and getting to the quarterback beyond 2020. Clark, 24, has been a consistent force on the interior for years now, starting all but four games over the past three seasons while compiling 16.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss.
2. David Bakhtiari
This man is very important. Not only does he chug double beers at Milwaukee Bucks games, but he also protects Aaron Rodgers' blindside. Since being drafted in 2013, the star left tackle has missed just SIX games. He's only 28, so he has some prime years left, meaning the Packers need to ensure Rodgers is in good hands until he decides to call it quits. Like Clark, Bakhtiari is also a free agent after next season.
1. Aaron Jones
Woah, the Packers prioritizing a running back?! Yup, here we are. Matt LaFleur has diversified Green Bay's offense, which saw Jones explode onto the scene this year with 1,084 rushing yards, 474 receiving yards on 49 catches, and a league-leading 16 rushing touchdowns (in addition to three receiving scores). The Pack havent seen such success out of a running back since Eddie Lacy in 2013-2014. Before that? Ryan Grant in 2009. Jones' deal expires after next year, and the Packers should waste no time locking him down for the future.
