3 Dark Horse Landing Spots for Josh Donaldson in MLB Free Agency
By Chris Pyo
With the signing of Anthony Rendon over with, the market for third basemen has thinned out a bit. However, Josh Donaldson is still on the market, although many are predicting that he'll return to the Atlanta Braves this offseason after he hit 37 home runs for them and led the Braves to a playoff spot. There are a couple of teams that could emerge from the ashes and snatch him up before the Braves get a chance to solidify any sort of contract offer. Here are three dark horse landing spots for Donaldson in MLB Free Agency.
3. Los Angeles Dodgers
It might seem odd to put the Dodgers on any list involving a dark horse team to sign a free agent, but that's exactly the case here. Even though the Dodgers have Justin Turner slotted at third base, it's reasonable to envision LA splurging on Donaldson, especially after the crosstown rival Angels signed Anthony Rendon. If Donaldson were to man third base, Turner would move to first and Max Muncy would become a utility infielder a la what DJ LeMahieu was supposed to be for the Yankees this season. The Dodgers can't possibly be comfortable sitting this idly while every other big market team gets deeper and deeper.
2. Minnesota Twins
Miguel Sano is manning third base right now for the Minnesota Twins, but the addition of Donaldson would further elevate a Twins roster that won 101 games last year. Moving Sano to first base could be a possibility for the Twins, as they would surely welcome the presence of Donaldson into their already-potent lineup. In the AL, you can never have too many bats in the lineup.
1. Milwaukee Brewers
Yes, the Milwaukee Brewers would be the ultimate surprise of free agency, but hey, the Brew Crew realistically need a stud third baseman to fill out their infield, as well as another bat to compliment Christian Yelich's perennial MVP skills. If this somehow goes through, the Brewers would instantly be elevated from a fringe to a surefire playoff team. The Brewers have the money, they need his skills, and this could end up working out for everyone in the end.
