3 Denzel Mims Highlights That Should Have Packers Fans Pumped About Team's Interest in Baylor WR
By Michael Luciano
The Green Bay Packers are in need of a No. 2 wide receiver to take some of the pressure off of Davante Adams. Luckily for Brian Gutekunst, the 2020 NFL Draft is supposed to be historically deep at this position, with Senior Bowl and Combine standout Denzel Mims making his mark as one of the best wideouts in the class of 2020, and it's no surprise he's on the Packers' radar. The former Baylor star, who caught 66 passes for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns, has plenty of speed and route-running refinement, but his ball skills will be his meal ticket, as evidenced by these three jaw-dropping catches.
3. Mims' Ball Skills on Display vs Texas
Baylor QB Charlie Brewer is as average as they come in terms of accuracy downfield, meaning Mims often times had to adjust to poorly-thrown balls on the fly. While this high, outside throw would have sailed over most receivers' heads, Mims was able to leap in the air, contort his body, and come down with the ball, all the while fighting off good coverage from Jalen Green and an encroaching Caden Sterns.
2. Mims Defies Gravity vs Texas Tech
This is when Mims put everyone on notice and announced that he was more than just a garden variety late-Day 2 receiver. Mims jumped nearly 11 feet in the broad jump and put up a 38.5 inch vertical, both of which are truly elite for a receiver as big as he is. Mims used every bit of those hops to float in the air and secure the catch along the sidelines with a toe tap. Isn't this the type of weapon Aaron Rodgers has been missing?
1. Mims Makes Catch of the Year vs Texas
Mims' best game as a prospect was against the Longhorns, as he reeled in seven passes for 125 yards and a touchdown against Tom Herman's team. This catch was the best out of all of them, as he almost went parallel to the ground in order to snag this fastball from Brewer. At 6-3 with Inspector Gadget arms and impeccably soft hands, Mims would see the field right away in Green Bay.
