3 Dumb Decisions Knicks Could Make on NBA Trade Deadline Day
By Scott Rogust
When following the NBA Trade Deadline Day action, some will choose to lock in on the Los Angeles powerhouses in the Lakers and Clippers. But let's be real: everyone, everywhere is waiting to see what the New York Knicks will do.
The Knicks set the tone on Tuesday after the team fired team president Steve Mills right before the deadline. Now, with player agent Leon Rose as the new man in charge, fans and talking heads are wondering if the Knicks will make their characteristic dumb moves.
Here are three idiotic decisions, all rumored already, that the Knicks could make on NBA Trade Deadline Day, with their entire front office in flux.
3. Trade Assets for Alex Caruso
The Lakers are looking to push themselves over the edge in pursuit of their first NBA Championship in a decade. One of the names who's entered trade rumors is that of bench player Alex Caruso. This smells like a characteristic desperation move for the Knicks. The "Bald Mamba" is averaging 5.5 points per game, but that's mostly due to the presence of LeBron James and Anthony Davis. You bring him to New York, and you'll see his averages diminish. Surrendering a draft selection for Caruso would be catastrophic.
2. Keep Marcus Morris
The Knicks have one lone, consistent performer on their team, and that's forward Marcus Morris. His presence isn't leading the Knicks to victories, and with teams like the Lakers and Clippers looking for an outside shooter, Morris is an obvious trade piece (who might even re-sign next summer anyway!). However, the Knicks sent shockwaves earlier in the week, claiming that they would consider keeping him and signing him to a contract extension this upcoming offseason. That would be the worst decision the Knicks could make. Teams looking to make one final push for the NBA Finals are willing to surrender young players and draft capital for Morris' services. The Knicks can collect, then re-sign Morris this summer. Turning down trade offers would be stupid, and is a good portion of the reason Steve Mills is no longer the head decision-maker. Hopefully, the Knicks flipped course here.
1. Overpay for D'Angelo Russell
This past summer, the Knicks refused to pay money for free agent guard D'Angelo Russell. Months later, they're willing to trade assets for Russell's services. Typical Knicks. The Golden State Warriors, who are essentially in tank mode with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson sidelined, are dangling Russell on the trade block. The Knicks have bit at the line, but the Warriors, deservingly so, are asking for the moon. If New York wanted Russell so badly, they should've paid him back in July. Trading for him at the expense of young players and draft picks makes little-to-no sense. But, this is the Knicks we're talking about.
