3 Free Agents Packers Need to Avoid in 2020 Offseason
The Green Bay Packers had a successful season in 2019. Reaching the NFC Championship Game is nothing to be upset about, but that team still has Super Bowl aspirations every year that Aaron Rodgers lines up under center. The Pack has improvements to make at several positions via free agency.
The NFL appears set on not disrupting the league calendar, so that means free agency is expected to start on time next week. There are a few players on the open market that should be avoided at all costs by the Packers.
3. Christian Kirksey
The Packers need help at linebacker, and Kirskey is reportedly meeting with the team. The linebacker had a great start to his career from 2014-2017. He never missed a game, and finished 2017 with 138 total tackles. However, he has appeared in a combined nine games since the start of 2018. He has had injuries all over his body, and that history makes it difficult to commit to him as a key piece on defense. The team would be better off looking at another former Brown in Joe Schobert.
2. Gerald McCoy
Gerald McCoy is an intriguing option on a short-term deal. He spent 2019 in Carolina, and had five sacks in 16 games. Yet he is 32 years old, and his success could lead him to demand a multi-year deal in free agency. The Packers have right around $25 million in cap space. If the team wants to invest in a defensive lineman, the better move would be to snag a younger player for less than what McCoy will cost.
1. Nelson Agholor
The Packers need to bring in at least one experienced wide receiver this offseason. Nelson Agholor is not that guy. He has a well-known problem with drops, and finished with only 363 yards in 11 games last season. The team would be better off going all-in on a player like A.J. Green or Robby Anderson. Spending money on a veteran receiver with a history of dropping the football is not a wise move.
