3 Free Agents the Bears Need to Target This Offseason
By Jackson Thompson
The Chicago Bears were a disappointment in 2019. The team that captured the imagination of their fanbase just a year earlier regressed to a middle-of-the-road pretender in just one season.
But the team is not without promise. Somewhere buried in the 8-8 third-place mud pit of the 2019 Bears were the remnants of a truly special team that's just waiting to break out again in 2020.
The roster is highlighted by some elite bright spots. The only problem is, the roster is also low-lighted by some serious problems. However, the issues aren't beyond the front office's power of fixing this offseason, so here are three free agents the Bears should target.
3. LB Dante Fowler Jr.
The absence of a truly legitimate pass rusher to play opposite of Khalil Mack is noticeable in Chicago. Leonard Floyd is an exceptional linebacker, but failed to generate enough pressure to take some of the offense's attention away from Mack. The addition of Fowler would solve this by giving the Bears another Monster of the Midway to even out the pass rush. Fowler racked up 11.5 sacks in 2019 and, despite some injury history, he's a proven talent and hunting down quarterbacks. He would fit right into the defensive heritage in Chicago.
2. RB Derrick Henry
The Bears' regression from a year ago can be defined by their regression on offense. With the league's 29th-ranked offense and 27th-ranked rushing attack, Chicago failed to move the ball week after week. Luckily for the Bears, a player who has made an art and science out of moving the ball is about to hit free agency. With the signing of Henry, the Bears would be getting the league's rushing champion, and the man single-handedly responsible for two of the biggest playoff upsets in recent memory. Henry would bring an assertiveness to the Bears offense the unit desperately needs, and his running style would make him a fan favorite in the Windy City.
1. QB Tom Brady
For years, Bears quarterbacks have lived in the shadow of Aaron Rodgers. In 2019, with Rodgers leading the Packers, Kirk Cousins on the Vikings, and Matthew Stafford in Detroit, Chicago was left with the worst quarterback in the NFC North in Mitch Trubisky. The Bears can flip this situation on its head with a signing that would turn the league upside down. Brady is looking to leave New England, and the Bears should do everything in their power to bring him to Chicago. Brady would help elevate both the pass and run game especially playing behind one of the NFL's best defenses.
