3 Free Agents the Chiefs Should Sign to Complete Offseason
The Kansas City Chiefs are already sitting in the top spot of the NFL as favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champions, yet the team can always get even better in the quest to build another unstoppable roster.
Three players who remain free agents stand out as players the Chiefs could target on non-guaranteed deals. The team has around $1.5 million in cap space, and could make some moves to add these players and build an even tougher roster.
3. Clay Matthews
Clay Matthews was released by Los Angeles this offseason and stands out as an intriguing veteran option. The team is stacked at the pass-rushing spots, but signing him could be similar to when the team added Terrell Suggs late in 2019. The veteran had eight sacks with the Rams and two forced fumbles in 13 games last season. Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson are the only two linebackers making over $1 million in 2020, making it possible Matthews could be fit into the budget if some cuts are made.
2. Darqueze Dennard
Darqueze Dennard is a former first-round pick who frequently dealt with injuries during his five years with the Cincinnati Bengals. He only has three interceptions in 77 career games. The experienced defensive back still stands out as a potential reclamation project who won't demand a major deal at all in free agency. The Chiefs could even clear up cap space at the position by cutting Bashaud Breeland and saving $500,000 after his recent legal trouble.
1. Devonta Freeman
The Chiefs have six running backs on the roster and used a first-round pick on Clyde Edwards-Helaire. That shouldn't stop the team from considering Devtona Freeman to spell their top pick and Damien Williams. The two-time Pro Bowler was released by Atlanta after two disappointing seasons, but still finished with over 1,000 total yards in 2019. He is the perfect dual-threat option out of the backfield that would fit in the Kansas City offense. If Freeman is healthy, the Chiefs could make the rest of the NFL look foolish by picking him up and making him a star again.
