3 Free Agents the Eagles Should Still Pursue
By Brian Cass
Howie Roseman and his Philadelphia Eagles have been busy this offseason, acquiring an abundance of talent through both free agency and the draft. They were able to shore up their front seven with the signings of Malik Jackson and Vinny Curry, and they bolstered their offensive arsenal with the addition of DeSean Jackson and Jordan Howard. Roseman has done a masterful job filling the holes, but that doesn't mean he's done just yet. Here are three free agents the Eagles could still go after.
3. CB Brent Grimes
The Eagles have a handful of young corners to work with heading into the 2019 season. After re-signing Ronald Darby, the Birds also have Jalen Mills, Cre'Von Leblanc, Avonte Maddox, Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones. All of them have the potential to start at some point for the Eagles, but none of them are proven commodities just yet. Bringing in a veteran like Brent Grimes, who played his college ball in Pennsylvania, would help solidify the cornerback position. He could help the youngsters develop their game. Last season with Tampa Bay, Grimes had zero interceptions for the first time since his rookie season. Clearly, he isn't the player he used to be, but there's no denying the veteran presence he'd bring to the young cornerback room of the Eagles.
2. DE Andre Branch
We all know the Eagles have one of the best front sevens in football, but with the retirement of Chris Long, they could use another pass rusher to add to their rotation. Andre Branch could be that guy. At 29 years old, he still has a good bit of football in him, and inserting him into a situational role could prolong his career. He had a down year last season with Miami, but in the two seasons before that, Branch recorded a total of 10 sacks, 13 tackles for a loss and 20 QB hits. He has the potential to be a solid situational pass rusher for the Birds if they sign him, so keep an eye out for his name being linked to the Eagles in the coming weeks.
1. OL Andy Levitre
With Brandon Brooks still recovering from the torn Achilles he sustained in their playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints, pursuing someone of Andy Levitre's stature may be in the cards for the Eagles. They did select offensive tackle Andre Dillard in the first round of this year's draft, but moving him to guard to mitigate the loss of Brooks could stunt his development as the team's future blindside blocker. Levitre missed nearly all of last season with injury, which is probably the only reason he's still on the open market. He has the ability to start at guard for almost any team, so bringing him to Philly would definitely provide necessary depth.
