3 Free Agents the Raiders Should Sign to Complete the Offseason
By Scott Rogust
Head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock have officially molded the Las Vegas Raiders into their image. Some of their additions have been slam dunks, while others leave us scratching our heads (i.e. the Damon Arnette draft pick). Even with these new players on the roster, the Raiders are still a year or two away from truly turning into a playoff contender, but they can expedite the process by adding some players that are currently available on the open market.
Here are three players the Raiders should bring in to Sin City before the start of the 2020 regular season.
3. Tramon Williams, CB
The Raiders entered the offseason with a glaring need at cornerback. Las Vegas did have an agreement in place with Eli Apple, but rescinded the offer due to medical updates that quickly surfaced. While they did draft Arnette, he's not exactly ready to be a starter just yet. Gruden would be wise to bring in a veteran corner like Tramon Williams. After a poor stint with the Cleveland Browns, Williams bounced back during his tenures with the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers in the past three seasons. Even at the age of 37, he's still a quality starting corner in the NFL. The Raiders would be wise to sign him and start him alongside Trayvon Mullen in 2020.
2. Carlos Hyde, RB
Las Vegas is still eager to add a veteran running back to work behind star rusher Josh Jacobs. They were eyeing Frank Gore, but lost out in that sweepstakes to the New York Jets. Hope is not lost for the Raiders, because Carlos Hyde is still on the market, which is simply amazing. This is a guy who rushed for over 1,070 yards and six touchdowns last season with the Houston Texans! How he's still a free agent is beyond us. Signing Hyde could give the Raiders a vicious one-two punch in the backfield next season. We can see Gruden salivating at the thought right now.
1. Everson Griffen, EDGE
Even with their additions via the draft and free agency, the Raiders still need pass rushing help. Maxx Crosby solidified his spot as Vegas' starting defensive end, but Clelin Ferrell hasn't lived up to his fourth overall selection in 2019. The Raiders added Carl Nassib, but he's not going to be the difference maker they think he is. Enter Everson Griffen. He's a much cheaper option than Jadeveon Clowney, but he's more productive than the former 2014 first overall pick. In 10 seasons, Griffen has hit the quarterback 176 times, while accumulating 74.5 sacks. There you go, Raiders, we fixed your pass rush with one signing. We'll wait for the check in the mail.
