3 Kickers Bears Should Chase After Robbie Gould Extension
By Michael Luciano
The Chicago Bears might have missed out on the best chance to fix their comically bad kicking situation when former Bears star Robbie Gould inked a contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers. This comes after they whiffed on adding a proven kicker in free agency, as names like Dan Bailey, Cairo Santos, and Pro Bowler Jason Myers all turned the Bears down. As the preseason inches closer by the day, the bears should look to add one of these veteran options to finally fix their kicking woes.
3. Nick Rose
We last saw Rose with the AAF's San Antonio Commanders and as a kickoff specialist with the Chargers during their 2018 playoff run. The last time he was tasked with handling field goals, Rose drilled 10 of his 11 kicks with the Washington Redskins. The former Longhorn's strong leg can cut through the Chicago wind in December without losing accuracy, and should get a call from Matt Nagy soon.
2. Kai Forbath
Despite owning a career 85.7 percent field goal percentage, a mark that is currently top 10 in NFL history, teams have been ambivalent about giving Forbath a shot. A veteran option who has led the league in field goal percentage twice, Forbath is deadly accurate, even if his leg isn't the strongest in the world. Forbath has missed exactly one kick from between 40-49 yards, which, as we all know, was a bit of a problem area for Cody Parkey and the Bears last year.
1. Matt Bryant
Signing a kicker that's older than the coach by three years will put the Bears over the top? Yes, if that kicker has been as accurate as Bryant over the last few years. Bryant made 88.7% of his kicks in the domed stadium Atlanta provides, but has also made 85% of his kicks on the road in his career. An experienced option who has ice in his veins when the chips are down, Bryant should be Chicago's No. 1 option.
