3 Low-Cost Free Agents the Chiefs Should Target This Offseason
By Michael Luciano
The Kansas City Chiefs likely won't be huge spenders in free agency this season, as an impending Patrick Mahomes mega contract and the franchise tag applied to Chris Jones makes it hard for Brett Veach to open up the checkbook. While Veach and Andy Reid might need to do some bargain bin shopping this offseason, that doesn't mean they can't bring in some quality players, as evidenced by these three potential targets.
3. Buccaneers EDGE Carl Nassib
While overshadowed by the emergence of Shaquil Barrett in Tampa Bay, Carl Nassib once again showed that he is one of the more versatile edge rushers in football. He piled up 34 tackles and six sacks, which was almost a carbon copy of his 29 tackle, seven-sack season in 2018. Steve Spagnuolo is committed to the 4-3 scheme, and Nassib is one of the more cost-effective options for that type of defense on the market.
2. Broncos OL Connor McGovern
Kansas City has a rock-solid pair of offensive tackles in Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher, but the interior of the line could use some bolstering. The former fifth-round pick has missed just one start in the last two seasons in Denver, and he stands as one of the few lineman in this free agent class with guard and center versatility. McGovern, who allowed just one sack all of last season, would be a perfect low-cost, yet quality addition.
1. Vikings CB Trae Waynes
When he's on, Waynes is among the best No. 2 cornerbacks in all of football. However, inconsistency over the last three seasons has helped Minnesota decide to allow him to test free agency. However, Waynes' speed was never in doubt, nor is his ability to make plays on the ball. Spagnuolo has helped revitalize the careers of Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland in Kansas City, and Waynes' physical gifts gives him more potential than those two. This is more than worth a roll of the dice for Reid and company.
