3 Most Underrated Moves of Chiefs Offseason
By Evan Wolff
In the NFL, one of the most difficult challenges that successful front offices face is retaining the largest possible amount of their talent. Especially on a team coming off of a Super Bowl run, like the Kansas City Chiefs, players are eager to cash in on their success and sign large contracts, all knowing a big-money Patrick Mahomes extension is around the corner. Despite these challenges, Chiefs GM Brett Veach has worked his magic to make sure that Chiefs can still compete for a championship in 2020. Here are the three most underrated moves of the Chiefs offseason.
3. Re-Signing FB Anthony Sherman
It may seem odd to include a fullback on this list, but upon further inspection, it becomes clear the impact that Anthony Sherman has on the Chiefs offense. With an ability to line up virtually anywhere on the field, and possessing exceptional blocking skills, Sherman is a valued asset in opening up holes for running backs and protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Signing Sherman to a one-year deal was a no-brainer for Veach.
2. Adding Jordan Ta'amu From the XFL
While Matt Moore certainly did not embarrass himself while filling in for Patrick Mahomes, last season showed that the Chiefs need a backup QB who fits the system, too. With no immediate solutions available in the NFL, Veach smartly went looking in to the XFL talent pool, and came out with St. Louis BattleHawks starJordan Ta'amu. Ta'amu lit up the XFL with his arm strength and his mobility, with achievements only overshadowed by PJ Walker. It was an extremely low-risk, high-reward signing that gives Veach quality backup coverage in case Patrick Mahomes gets hurt again.
1. Re-Signing DT Mike Pennel
With so much focus on the offensive side of the ball for the Chiefs, it can be forgiven if you don't pay as much attention to defensive transactions from Brett Veach. However, his decision to re-sign Mike Pennel was a necessary one to maintain continuity on the defensive line. Pennel, who is one of the best players against the run in the NFL, will be welcomed back with open arms by Chiefs fans after his hit on Jimmy Garappolo helped win Super Bowl 54. That was reason enough to pay the man, after all.
