3 Moves That Will Get Eagles Back to Super Bowl Contention
By Michael Luciano
The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the most improbable playoff stories across the NFL in 2019, as Carson Wentz and Doug Pederson made the postseason despite losing their starting running back and top four wide receivers. Even with that, Philly is far away from being regarded as a championship contender in their current state. These three moves, however, could get them back in the Super Bowl picture.
3. Move On From Jason Peters
Peters is a Hall of Famer, and he's been arguably the best left tackle in football over the last decade. However, he'll be 38 next year, and it might be time for Philly to cut him loose. Having used a first-round pick on former Washington State offensive tackle Andre Dillard in last year's draft, the Eagles already have his successor lined up. Pederson needs to rip the Band-Aid off and make Dillard the starter.
2. Draft a Speedy Wide Receiver
The loss of deep threat DeSean Jackson, who will turn 34 next season, was arguably the most impactful injury in the Eagles' wide receiving corps. Don't be surprised if the Eagles use their first- or second-round pick on a burner who will one day take over for Jackson. With Alabama's Henry Ruggs, Arizona State's Brandon Aiyuk, and TCU's Jalen Reagor all making a case for a first-round pick, any one of those three players would be an ideal fit for Philadelphia.
1. Load up On Defensive Backs
The Eagles might have been throwing to converted quarterbacks and practice-squad guys at the tail end of last season, but that can at least be attributed to some comical bad luck with injuries. The secondary was just plain awful. Philly can't keep trotting out Ronald Darby, Sidney Jones, and Jalen Mills and pretend that they're serious Super Bowl contenders. Be it through free agency, trades, or the draft, two new defensive backs MINIMUM are required.
