3 Packers Players Who Will Win Starting Jobs at Some Point in 2020
By Scott Rogust
The winners of the "Most Perplexing NFL Team Award" are the Green Bay Packers. General manager Brian Gutekunst didn't spend much in free agency and used his draft picks on the future rather than making the necessary win-now selections. Even so, the Packers are still the favorites to win the NFC North.
Plenty of players will maintain their starting jobs in 2020 as Green Bay navigates their slate, but these three players will jockey for No. 1 roles as the season goes on.
3. CB Chandon Sullivan
The Packers have their top two cornerback spots filled by Jaire Alexander and Kevin King. While that's all well and good, they have a void at slot corner. Veteran Tramon Williams remains a free agent, and while there's some hope he'll return to Green Bay expect Chandon Sullivan to take his spot if that doesn't materialize. Last season, Sullivan played 348 snaps all across the secondary, and he allowed just 13 receptions on 32 targets. Sullivan, a former undrafted rookie out of Georgia State, has a strong chance to be the starting slot corner for the Packers in 2020.
2. DE Kingsley Keke
The Packers have their certified edge rushers in Za'Darius and Preston Smith, but there are some questions surrounding who will lineup alongside All-Pro nose tackle Kenny Clark. Enter Kingsley Keke. The defensive lineman won over the hearts of the Packers due to his versatility along the line of scrimmage at Texas A&M. In his senior season, Keke recorded 51 tackles and 7.5 sacks. Additionally, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said Keke is already in line to make a big jump in production heading into the upcoming season. If that's the case, we can fully expect Keke to get significant starters snaps in 2020.
1. TE Jace Sternberger
The Packers haven't had a reliable tight end for quarterback Aaron Rodgers to target since Jermichael Finley. They parted ways with free agent bust Jimmy Graham, and as of this writing, the team has Marcedes Lewis as their starter. They absolutely cannot do this. In two full seasons, Lewis has tallied just 18 receptions for 195 yards and one touchdown. Now's the time for Jace Sternberger to take over the reins. Green Bay obviously had high hopes for the former Texas A&M Aggie, since they selected him in the third round last year. In his final season in college, Sternberger caught 48 passes for 832 yards and 10 touchdowns, showing that he can be an absolute weapon in head coach Matt LaFleur's offense.
