3 Phillies Players Who Won't Make the Team Out of Spring Training But Probably Should
By Michael Luciano
The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to piece things together and compete in the crowded NL East in 2020. Joe Girardi has been installed as the manager, and the addition of Didi Gregorius will help supplement an already loaded lineup. That glut of talent at several key positions means that these three Spring Training standouts are likely headed for stints at Triple-A Lehigh Valley to open the season, even if their performance in the spring has been worthy of a spot on the big-league roster.
3. RHP Trevor Kelley
Kelley allowed almost a run per inning in 10 forgetful appearances with the Boston Red Sox, but the non-roster invite has performed much better in 2020, as he has given up just one hit through 5.1 spring innings, striking out seven batters in the process. The Phillies bullpen might be set, however, which could result in Kelley getting left out, but he has done everything possible to make the club.
2. INF Logan Forsythe
The Phillies already have their backup veteran utility man quota met, with Josh Harrison expected to play a key role off the bench. This development means that Forsythe, who spent most of his time at first base last season, could miss out on making the MLB roster despite boasting a .368 average and hitting two home runs this spring. He might get a raw deal in Philadelphia, but he's quality enough for a big-league roster.
1. 3B Alec Bohm
Bohm was picked third overall by the Phillies in 2018, and the 6-5 third baseman is finally starting to show signs that he is breaking through. Bohm has hit .409 in March, leading the team with nine hits while striking out just twice in 22 at-bats. The presence of Jean Segura and Scott Kingery means Bohm probably isn't starting 2020 in the bigs, but his time will come very soon.
