3 Players the Patriots Should Consider Releasing or Trading to Help With Salary Cap Relief

The New England Patriots rarely find themselves in salary cap hell, mostly due to the fact that they seldom dole out big money to players. However, Tom Brady has requested that he wants a few more big money offensive skill position players if he is to come back, which could lead to these three players either getting cut or traded in order for the team to help make ends meet.

3. EDGE John Simon

Last season, John Simon recorded four sacks and started 12 games as one of New England's defensive ends. Simon still has another year left on his contract, but the Patriots could move him if they are pleased with the progress of 2019 third round pick Chase Winovich. If Simon leaving means Brady gets a new wide receiver, I'm sure New England fans will be happy with that trade-off.

2. C David Andrews

Andrews' inclusion on this list is not his fault in the slightest. He missed the entire 2019 season after some scary blood clots threatened his entire pro career. As cold and harsh as it may seem, the Patriots can't afford to take a "wait and see" approach with Andrews as he looks to return to the field. If he does find his way back it would be an amazing comeback, but he doesn't make sense for New England from a personnel or financial standpoint at this juncture.

1. S Patrick Chung

Chung has played 10 of his 11 seasons in the NFL with the Patriots, and he has frequently been heralded as one of the most underrated players in the entire league. However, the injuries started to mount up last year, and his lack of speed is starting to become a problem. With Devin McCourty and Duron Harmon both starting-caliber safeties, Belichick could be feeling in the mood for a youth movement as he dumps Chung to splurge on a wideout or running back.
