3 Players Texans Must Avoid Signing in Free Agency
By Karl Rasmussen
The Houston Texans are anticipated to be big spenders in the offseason, but they'll need to be wary about doling out major contracts to the wrong players. With a roster on the brink of contention, the Texans will likely be looking to address various needs in free agency in order to take the next step. This offseason could set the bar for Houston's title pursuits, so with that in mind, the team should avoid signing these three big-named free agents.
3. Bryan Bulaga
Offensive line is obviously a glaring need for the Texans, who allowed 49 sacks in 2019. There are some talented offensive lineman available, and the Texans should be in pursuit for some of the free agency's biggest names, but Bulaga is not the answer for Houston. Based on the contract he's reportedly expecting, the Texans would be better served pursuing a younger talent for the trenches, or signing a cheaper veteran.
2. Leonard Williams
Once a top pick in the draft by the Jets, Leonard Williams never truly took the step to stardom that many envisioned. Well, after being offloaded to the Giants, Williams could be destined for the open market, should he not be re-signed or tagged in the coming days. While the potential is still there for the 6-5, 290-pound 25-year-old, there are more established options available on the market that the Texans would be better suited to pursue.
1. Chris Harris
Chris Harris' tenure in Denver was prolific, but it's finally coming to a close. The veteran CB will hit free agency this new league year, and the Texans, who could use a boost to the secondary, should resist the temptation to sign him. Harris' performance has slowed down in recent seasons, and the last thing the Texans need ahead of Deshaun Watson's payday is to be held back by a declining veteran on an oversized contract.
