3 Players That Definitely Won't Be on the Tigers Roster Next Season

You won't find a more diluted roster in terms of talent in all of baseball than the current Detroit Tigers. None of their veterans bring much to the table, forcing them to sit and wait for their young talent in the minors to arrive. With cleaning house in mind, here are three players that definitely won't be on the Tigers roster next season.

3. LHP Matt Moore

Matt Moore did throw two scoreless outings at the beginning of the year, but then he suffered a knee injury and has missed the rest of the 2019 campaign. Despite his natural talent, Moore has been injury prone over the course of his career, and with him reaching free agency (yet again), it doesn't make a lot of sense for Detroit to bring him back, with all their young starters close to the big leagues. The Tigers were hoping to maximize Moore's value and deal him at the deadline. That did not work. No need for round two.

2. SS Jordy Mercer

When healthy, Jordy Mercer has been decent with the bat to go along with his sure-handed defense, but he's appeared in only 71 games and is headed to free agency. Unless the Tigers want a veteran up the middle once more, there's no reason to bring Mercer back.

1. LHP Matthew Boyd

Outside of maybe Michael Fulmer, who hasn't toed a big league mound since 2018 because of Tommy John surgery, left-hander Matthew Boyd is the only Tiger with trade value. While he's had a rough second half to the season, Boyd is eighth in all of baseball with 234 strikeouts. The ability to get swings and misses is valuable, and could fetch a decent haul in return if Detroit looks to continue stocking up on young talent. Will they hang on too long and repeat their Nicholas Castellanos mistake, though?
