3 Players the Cubs Should Explore Trading This Offseason
By Parker White
One of the more disappointing teams in all of baseball were the Chicago Cubs. They won just 84 games and decided to let manager Joe Maddon walk after the season, in need of a big-time adjustment to their culture. Changes are coming to the Northside of Chicago, and they shouldn't just stop at the coaching staff.
With a fresh start in mind, here are three players the Cubs should explore trading this offseason.
3. INF Daniel Descalso
I understand that Daniel Descalso is a utility man off the bench, not a starter. However, should a player with 194 at-bats last year being paid $2.5 million in 2020 hit .173 with two home runs and an OPS+ of 37? They can find someone else to do that job and produce a lot more. Let's see if any other team thinks they need a veteran presence on the bench.
2. RHP Tyler Chatwood
The Cubs signed Tyler Chatwood to a three-year deal to lengthen their rotation, but he's been so bad that they moved him to the bullpen this season. Do the Cubs want to pay him $13 million next year to be a long-to-middle reliever? Chatwood has not been great at Wrigley, and we are talking about a pitcher who spent the first part of his career in Coors Field. Chicago has to try and get out from under his contract.
1. INF Addison Russell
The Cubs should've really considered cutting ties with Addison Russell when the news about domestic violence against his wife came out last year, and on top of that, they should try and trade him now because he's not a very good player. Russell has never hit above league average over his five-year career, including last season, when he slashed a woeful .237/.308/.391 with nine home runs and 23 RBI over 82 games. Russell is not worth the headache, both on and off the field.
