3 Players the Tigers Should Explore Trading This Offseason
By Chris Russo
The Detroit Tigers are very clearly rebuilding. The 2019 season was the second worst in the team's history, as the Tigers posted a 47-114 record. Yet, the Tigers' worst season came in 2003, and thanks to some solid moves, Detroit won two American League Pennants and five division titles between 2006 and 2014. While achieving a successful rebuild is easier said than done, the Tigers will do everything in their power to fast-forward the process. With that in mind, here are three players the Tigers should consider trading this winter.
3. Niko Goodrum
Goodrum has proven himself valuable in Detroit, especially in 2019. He played at least one game at every position other than pitcher and catcher, plus he had 12 home runs, 45 RBIs, 12 stolen bases, and 105 hits in 112 games. He could be good trade bait for Detroit, especially for a team in need of a solid utility player.
2. Jordan Zimmermann
Zimmermann had the worst season of his career after a bounce-back year in 2018. In 2019, he finished 1-13 with a 6.91 ERA. The Tigers would hope to trade the 33-year-old, and they could actually sell teams on the fact he allowed under a home run per start and just two walks-per-nine innings.
1. Matthew Boyd
Boyd finished the 2019 season with a 9-12 record atop a weak rotation. His 4.56 ERA was not terrific, but he was a bright spot on a mediocre Tigers team. Though he led the league by allowing 39 home runs, his walks-per-nine ratio is similar to that of Zimmermann and he does not get into trouble outside of the longball.
