3 Players Vikings Must Avoid Signing in Free Agency
By Brady Williams
The Minnesota Vikings had a good run to the NFC Divisional round of the 2019 NFL Playoffs, but fell short to the 49ers. Despite stats about Kirk Cousins' inability to win on Monday nights, Minnesota showed that they have the foundations of a great team. Free agency is the perfect place to bolster their roster and take the next step, but if they pick some of these clunkers, they could be sliding the opposite direction.
3. Andrew Whitworth
The Vikings need talent up front. Kirk Cousins is a clear pocket passer and needs protecting. With left tackle Riley Reiff underperforming all year, it would be enticing to hire a veteran like Andrew Whitworth, who excelled in a pass-heavy offense. However, he's not getting any younger at the age of 38. What's more concerning is the clear step back he took this past season. Pro Football Focus lowered his grade from 83.1 to 72.8, and he's on the wrong side of 35 to be making any significant improvements.
2. Ndamukong Suh
Unless the Buccaneers re-sign Ndamukong Suh, he's probably going to move on to his fifth team. While the Vikings need a disruptive force in the middle of the defensive line, they should avoid being his next destination. Suh only forced 10 QB hurries and 24 pressures in 2019. He's far removed from the Pro Bowl-caliber he once was, and doling out cash for him simply isn't worth it.
1. AJ Green
AJ Green didn't play a single snap in 2019 after sustaining an ankle injury in the offseason. Injuries have been the only blemish on an otherwise spotless career for the 31-year-old wideout. He's been phenomenal on a bad team, but he's missed significant time in 2018, 2016, and 2014 due to various injuries. With Stefon Diggs seemingly out of Minnesota, they'll need more depth at the wide receiver position, but despite Green's talent, he may be too risky to sign to a big deal.
