3 Reasons Phillies' Offensive Outburst is Sustainable
After losing seven straight games, including a sweep at the hands of the tanking Marlins, the Phillies bounced back in a major way thanks to back-to-back offensive explosions against the Mets.
Expect that offensive performance to continue thanks to some luck, a little bamboo, and these three reasons.
1. Rhys Hoskins
The Phillies first baseman had been disappointing in the slugging department of late, hitting only two home runs in a span of 23 games. Since that slump, he's hit three home runs in four games and looks to be finding his power stroke once more. The Phillies need Hoskins to be a threat in the middle of their lineup.
2. Lineup Stability
Philadelphia has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play all season, but this series with the Mets is showing a glimpse into what a successful post-Andrew McCutchen lineup could look like. After the every day leadoff man tore his ACL in early June, manager Gabe Kapler has tinkered with the lineup to no avail. But recently, Scott Kingery and Maikel Franco have stepped up to fill holes in a struggling lineup. As the lead off man, Kingery is 4-for-10 with a .500 OBP. Meanwhile, Franco's struggles have subsided, as he's hit .500 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI in his last two starts.
3. Sheer Talent
The Phillies have loads of talent, as offseason acquisitions of JT Realmuto, Jean Segura and Bryce Harper are just three of the former All-Stars currently on the roster. Baseball is a game of streaks, and the team has too much talent to not break out of this prolonged slump. Harper, Hoskins, Segura, Realmuto and Kingery at the top of a lineup is as dangerous as any, and the team knows its just a matter of time before they get going.
