3 Reasons Why Ohio State Deserves to Be No. 1 in the College Football Playoff Rankings
By Michael Luciano
The difference between getting the No. 1 seed and the No. 2 seed in this year's college football playoff could be massive, as the team who gets ranked No. 1 has a matchup against beatable Oklahoma on the docket, while the No. 2 team must face Trevor Lawrence and Clemson at a neutral field. With Ohio State and LSU duking it out for the top spot, the case for Justin Fields, JK Dobbins and the Buckeyes being declared the top team in the country is as clear as day.
3. They Have 5 Wins Over Ranked Teams
With two wins over Wisconsin, as well as convincing triumphs over Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State, the Buckeyes have five wins against ranked teams on the season, with four of those wins coming against teams still ranked at the time of this writing. They also took an improved Indiana team behind the woodshed in a 51-10 win while beating Group of Five darlings Cincinnati 42-0. Ohio State's schedule is just as difficult as that vaunted LSU schedule everyone speaks so highly of, and that should be another feather in their cap as they convince the committee to put them at No. 1.
2. They're The Most Complete Team In the Country
Despite what you saw yesterday against a shellshocked Georgia team, Ohio State's defense is clearly superior as compared to LSU. With Jeff Hafley and Greg Mattison working their magic, the Buckeyes are all but impenetrable, as evidenced by their second half against Wisconsin. Chase Young will beta any left tackle in the country, while Jeff Okudah takes away the best receiver on the field with his eyes closed. Should that group get the No. 1 ranking? Or should the team who gave up 37 to Ole Miss and 38 to Vanderbilt get it?
1. They've Been the Most Dominant Team in the Country
Ohio State has yet to play a game where the margin of victory was 10 points or less, and have only had two games decided by less than 20 points. Think about that. Their closest game was an 11-point win against Penn State in which the Nittany Lions could barely move the football. LSU might have beaten more Top 10 teams, but performances against Texas (seven point win) and Alabama (five point win) show that you can at least go toe-to-toe with LSU. Ryan Day has been blowing everyone's doors off, and that dominance should earn him the top spot in the playoff.
