3 Reliable Backup QBs Eagles Should Sign to Protect Against Carson Wentz Injury

The Philadelphia Eagles mustered just nine points in a home playoff loss against the Seattle Seahawks after Carson Wentz was knocked out of the game in the first quarter due to a concussion. While it's impossible to predict or defend against head injuries like that, as you can't prepare for Jadeveon Clowney spearing into the back of your head, the injury concerns around Wentz are still as real as ever, and they need a more viable backup quarterback than a 40-year-old pulled out of retirement in Josh McCown. These three should be their targets as the offseason approaches.

3. Chase Daniel

Daniel has made a living of bouncing around the league as a backup over the last decade, as filling in for an injured Mitch Trubisky as a Bear was Daniel's first ever extended action in the NFL. With a completion percentage of nearly 70% and six touchdowns against four picks as a Bear, Daniel has shown he can win you a game or two in a pinch, provided that he gets a solid running game. Uninspiring? Yes. Reliable? Also yes.

2. Case Keenum

On a Redskins team that went nowhere this season, Keenum managed to throw for 11 touchdowns against five interceptions, while completing nearly 65% of his passes. The prolific college passer is the prototypical bridge quarterback and high-end backup, and he could end up in Philly if Ron Rivera chooses not to retain him as competition for Dwayne Haskins. Keenum is just a few years removed from an NFC Championship game, so Eagles fans can breathe easy if he has to lead this offense for a few games here and there.

1. Marcus Mariota

The emergence of Ryan Tannehill has all but confirmed that the former Tennessee Titans No. 2 overall pick will be playing elsewhere. Philly could be the ideal place to rebuild his career, as their offense can take advantage of his mobility, accuracy on intermediate throws, and athletic ability. Even on his worst day, Mariota is an efficient passer that can pull off one or two splash plays a game, and won't turn the ball over. If he doesn't get offers as a starter in free agency, look for him to take a backup job like the one Philadelphia can offer.
