3 Relievers Red Sox Can Target at Winter Meetings

The Boston Red Sox missed the playoffs in 2019 following their 2018 World Series Win and there is plenty of blame to go around.

While Boston's starting rotation was an issue in 2019, their bullpen was even more disappointing following the departures of both Craig Kimbrel and Joe Kelly. Well, the Red Sox will be aiming to improve their bullpen in the offseason, and here are three relievers they could target.

1. Joe Jimenez

Jimenez, just 24 years old, is on a Detroit Tigers team that is clearly not attempting to win right now. Once a top five prospect in the Tigers' system, Jimenez has flashed potential in the majors. It's hard to tell what kind of price tag Detroit would place on him, but he would be a great piece to help Boston remain competitive while improving their bullpen.

2. Dellin Betances

Betances would be a boom or bust signing for the Boston Red Sox. He only pitched two innings all of last season for the Yankees before hitting free agency, so his price tag may be lesser than what it would be coming off a full season of work. When healthy, Betances has been an excellent reliever with a career ERA of 2.36 and a sterling 14.6 K/9. Yankees fans would get sick to their stomachs envisioning Betances moving to Boston, giving the Red Sox all the more reason to pursue the hard-throwing right-hander.

3. Ken Giles - RHP Toronto Blue Jays

Giles is likely to be dealt this offseason by the Blue Jays and the Sox should jump all over that. The 29-year-old right-hander was a fantastic closer for the Jays last season, logging an ERA of 1.87, 23 saves, and 83 strikeouts across 53 appearances. An experienced closer like Giles could be a huge addition for Boston's bullpen, if they're willing to meet Toronto's price tag.
