3 Sneaky Free Agent Moves Patriots Can Still Make Before 2019 Season

The New England Patriots once again enter a new season as the defending Super Bowl champs. Man, some things never change. But, before the year officially kicks off, there's still plenty of time for the Pats to add some bodies to the roster.

Could Bill Belichick end up pulling off some stunners? Here's a look at three possible moves this team can still make.

1. Sign Gerald McCoy

The six-time Pro Bowler was released by the Buccaneers on May 20 after nine seasons with the team. The Patriots have expressed early interest in the defensive tackle, looking to bolster their defensive line. The move would make sense for McCoy if his main objective is to win football games and contend for a Super Bowl. The Patriots are perennial contenders and would give him the opportunity to compete for the Lombardi Trophy.

2. Looking Passed Free Agency: Trade for Le'Veon Bell

Just because the New York Jets signed Le'Veon Bell doesn't mean they are going to keep him. In fact, NFL insider John Clayton said he could see New York trading Bell before the season even starts. The only thing the Patriots are really missing is a superstar running back (no disrespect to Sony Michel), and Le'Veon could fill that void. We've seen crazier things. Though it seems unlikely, you never know what might happen.

3. Convince Gronk to Unretire

No matter how much they look to the free-agent market, the New England Patriots are not going to find a tight end quite like Gronk. The five-time Pro-Bowler is perhaps the best player in NFL history at the position and, although it is a long shot, getting Rob Gronkowski to rejoin the organization would only make the Pats that much more of a threat come September. If he gets bored of partying all summer, maybe a return to the gridiron could be in store.
