The National League sports some unexpected competitors this year. Preseason favorites have largely performed up to snuff, but there are a few surprises that find themselves in the playoff mix, and these three underdogs in particular should consider buying at the trade deadline.

3. New York Mets

Even after adding a slew of big names in the offseason, most expected the Mets to finish fourth in their division. With the Nationals under-performing, though, the Mets have a chance to nab a playoff spot. Despite their struggles, they sit just 4.5 games out of first place in the NL East. Perhaps a managerial change and another bullpen arm could turn the season around in Queens.

2. San Diego Padres

When the Padres signed Manny Machado, they had expectations of contending in the near future, but not 2019. However, the emergence of Chris Paddack and Fernando Tatis Jr. now has them just four games out of a Wild Card spot, sitting at an even .500 on the year. They might not go all in, but a few thrifty upgrades at the deadline could help them reach the postseason.

1. Arizona Diamondbacks

With Paul Goldschmidt and AJ Pollock departing in free agency, most expected the Diamondbacks to tank hard this year. However, they're 35-32 and just 2.5 games out of a Wild Card berth. The offense is fantastic, with key contributions from Ketel Marte and Eduardo Escobar, as the team has produced an NL-leading 355 runs. A few upgrades to the bullpen and they could be one of the most dangerous teams in the NL.
