3 Top Prospects Mets Fans Can Expect to See in the MLB This Year
By Michael Luciano
Even after shipping Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn to Seattle, the New York Mets have plenty of depth in their minor league system that could give a team trying to make some waves in the NL East some reinforcements as the season rolls along. These three prospects could cut their teeth in the major leagues in 2019 for the Mets.
3. Patrick Mazeika- C
Catcher has been a black hole of late for the Mets, as Travis d'Arnaud is now out of town and Wilson Ramos hasn't lived up to expectations. Mazeika is currently showing off his power at Double-A Binghamton, smacking eight extra base hits in 19 games. The Mets No. 26 overall prospect needs to improve as a defensive catcher, but his bat will get him to the majors soon enough.
2. Anthony Kay- LHP
Since Tommy John surgery, Kay has come back better than ever, consistently sitting in the mid-90s with his fastball. His excellent curveball and changeup have also remained. Kay has used that polished repertoire to pile up a .152 BAA, a 1.47 ERA over seven starts, and 37 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. The No. 7 prospect in the Mets farm system, Kay shouldn't be in the minors much longer.
1. Ryley Gilliam- RHP
Gilliam has already earned one promotion in the minors this season, currently playing at the Double-A level. He's logged 11 relief appearances in the minors this year, logging a 2.70 ERA with 27 strikeouts across 16.2 innings pitched. The way the Mets' bullpen has functioned thus far, it wouldn't be too surprising to see him get a late-season call-up in order to reinforce the squad. He's currently ranked as the team's No. 20 overall prospect.
