3 Unheralded Players Who Will Make an Impact for Yankees in 2019 Playoffs
By Jerry Trotta
The great thing about baseball is that you don't necessarily need star power to clinch a postseason berth. More often than not, it's a welcoming perk that complements a compilation of above-average players, who all execute their responsibilities.
The New York Yankees, thanks to an endless list of injuries throughout 2019, now have plenty of both. Let's highlight three unsung heroes who will prove imperative for the Pinstripes in the upcoming playoffs.
3. Tyler Wade
If there's one flaw to note about the Bronx Bombers, it's the fact that they rely far too much on the home run ball. Tyler Wade counters that predicament with his speed on the basepaths and scrappy hitting prowess. Not to mention, Aaron Boone can insert him as a defensive replacement in late-game scenarios.
2. Cameron Maybin
It looks as though the Yanks are letting Cameron Maybin's wrist heal in time for the playoffs. With such a gargantuan lead in the division and plenty of reinforcements to deploy to capture MLB's best record, the idea makes perfect sense. The 32-year-old outfielder has significant playoff experience (he won a World Series with the Astros back in 2017) that he will use to his advantage this time around. Killa Cam's glove is as good as they come and his .284 average through 218 at-bats tells us that he will have something to say for New York in the postseason.
1. Gio Urshela
Remember Miguel Andujar's superb rookie year from a season ago? Well, if you don't, we forgive you because Gio Urshela has been nothing short of spectacular at third base for the Bombers. His glove is elite and his knack for clutch hits cannot be understated. The 27-year-old is slashing .325/.365/.554 to go with 20 home runs, 73 RBI, and 70 runs scored. Call us crazy, but Gio staying hot in October might just be the key to the Yanks hoisting the Commissioner's Trophy.
